It is essential to maintain the path of travel or accessible route to comply with the code. The asphalt wears over time, creating cracks, and paint erodes, and signs are vandalized, among other things. This client upgraded the entire center's path of travel by following the formal plans, obtaining city permits, and completing the construction. It had passed both the CASp and city inspections.
Two years later, the client hired an asphalt contractor to seal, coat, and restripe the center. Unfortunately, the contractor was not aware of the code and ended up altering an accessible parking stall, shortening the width of all accessible parking stalls, and removing the detectable warning domes on a curb ramp, leaving the client open to an ADA lawsuit.
The client then contacted ACR, and we corrected the original plan and provided a CASp report to confirm that the work was done correctly.
